The developers of GIMP have released GIMP 3.0, the first major update to the free graphics editor in seven years. Key changes include support for non-destructive layers, text styling, off-canvas image editing, support for the Adobe RGB color space, and improved Photoshop compatibility. Long-awaited usability improvements like multiple layer selection have also been introduced. GIMP 3.0 supports non-destructive layers, which lets you edit filters and image adjustments after they’ve been applied. Text styling has also been expanded and a new Paint Select tool has been added. Other new features include off-canvas editing support, improved Photoshop compatibility, and support for new image compression formats. The update also includes support for more languages for scripting and plugin development, and the development team plans to move toward more frequent, but smaller, releases. The next update to GIMP 3.2 is expected within a year, following a series of bug fixes in version 3.0.
